Learn4dev - Joint Competence Development

The network is not formalised nor has its own staff or secretariat. It exists thanks to the commitment of its members to contribute to more efficient aid. It thereby benefits from its informal and thus flexible structure.

The evolution of the learn4dev network took place against the background of global paradigm shifts. From the Rome Declaration on Harmonisation (2003) over the Millennium Goals (2000), the Busan agreement (2012) and today's Sustainable Development Goals (2015), the network has always positioned itself within the evolutions and changes in the global development agenda. The essence of the learn4dev network are the Learning Initiatives. Each initiative is created around a specific topic or common area of interest and is moderated by a Learning Initiative leader. Within the Learning Initiatives, members work together on training initiatives, the co-creation of tools or the sharing of knowledge.

Today the network counts 34 member organisations including bilateral donor organisations, multilateral organisations and international training and research centres. Become a L4D member

CORE GROUP

Learn4dev's Core Group serves as a board for the network. It includes members who are organisers of the most recent and forthcoming Annual Meetings. As all members are expected to help organise an Annual Meeting at some point, each will have an opportunity to participate in the Core Group as well.
The Core Group typically meets four times a year. While the Core Group requires extraordinary commitment from members, its meetings can be held at the offices of learn4dev members who are not part of the Core Group, including back-to-back with meetings of one or more Expert Groups.

LEARNING INITIATIVES

The Learning Initiatives are a major pillar of the learn4dev network. Each is founded when at least three members of the network propose to form a group and join efforts to work on a specific topic. While some groups might choose to focus on knowledge sharing, others work towards developing learning programmes or training materials.
Besides regular exchange among members of a Learning Initiative, each selects a leader to represent the Initiative and reports on its activities at learn4dev’s Annual Meeting. 

FOCAL POINTS

Focal points are responsible for:
•    Ensuring visibility of the training and learning activities developed by his/her organization and open for the learn4dev members by publishing the information on the learn4dev website.
•    Disseminating information about learning opportunities provided by other learn4devmembers among the colleagues of his/her organization.
•    Coordinating needs and contributions of the members of the expert groups of his/her organization with learn4dev, including proposals of new burning issues.
•    Motivating colleagues to join expert groups.

ANNUAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting is an occasion to get together, attend interactive and lively debates, discuss and update the network partners on the state of play in development-related activities. The network meets each year for a joint learning exchange and to decide on future strategies.

The Annual Meeting 2020 took place in November in Paris (France) and was hosted by IIEP-UNESCO.
